Deerington Application

IN CHARACTER

Character Name: Rogue
Canon: X-Men: Evolution
Canon Point: Rogue is taken from right after Cajun Spice in her canon, but also after 5 years in Luceti and about six months in Drift Fleet.

In-Game Tattoo Placement: It should go just above her modified Luceti tattoo/bar code, on the back of her neck.
Current Health/Status: Fit and healthy.
Age: 23
Species: Human-Mutant

History:
Much of her canon history is covered in this quite thorough wiki although she was taken just after Cajun Spice, and has not seen the resolution of the series, or discovered that Mystique, who she thought she killed, is actually alive.

CRAU History and Impact:
Rogue has spent 5 years in Luceti, a charming little village where all the inhabitants have wings, the world is at war, wild shifts occur that will induce everything from random teleporting to turning one’s skin blue, to more sinister experiments where you are forced to fall in love or your personality and history is rewritten for the purpose of the scientists who claim to be doing it all to you for the good of the world.

During this time she:
1) Grew to the ripe old age of 22.

2) Became the proprietor of her own shop.

3) Formed a relationship with a healing spirit and a fire spirit, giving her some experience in using power responsibly and for fun and to help others.

4) Had a few, determined friends force into her the fact that she was:
a) not a monster
b) someone actually worthwhile
c) because her powers did not define her
d) that she should take risks to be happy and actually live her life - stop punishing herself, and try to actually live. (this is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT and a huge difference in her character that also becomes the key to several later developments)

5) Was occasionally made leader of the X-Men, due to either being the oldest or having the most experience. This particularly came into play during combat situations, or when they had tough decisions to make. Each time someone more qualified showed up (Scott, Logan, or Ororo), Rogue was more than happy to cede leadership back. It’s worth noting, though, that the team did well under her.

6) Was experimented upon! All the stinking time! Or at least once a month. Overall, this had the effect of making Rogue cling even harder to her understanding of herself as a person. She already felt that her identity was under assault from the influence of the psyches in her mind, but these experiments made it even worse.

One experiment that had a tremendous impact on her was when she was returned home with Tony Stark and their memories were rewritten so as to be first half-niece and then adopted daughter. This didn’t only deepen their bond, but it opened Rogue’s eyes to a whole different way of viewing her powers. It also gave her a stronger kinship and understanding of Tony’s world… but the feeling of family, even if broken and messed up, was the most important thing she took away.

Another incredibly significant experiment was the amnesia experiment, where all of Rogue’s memories were wiped away and she was just left with hints. This was a much more light-hearted Rogue, someone able to laugh freely… and love freely. Rogue without memories formed an attachment to Loki without memories, an attachment that later resulted in pursuit on Loki’s part. Rogue put him off for months, but he promised he’d never lie to her (and he didn’t), he shared his pain with her (and she was struck by the similarities in their stories), and not to be dismissed - he’d found a way to touch her. Eventually, Rogue decided to take the chance and be with him. ...needless to say, this did not go over well with Tony Stark, or the other Avengers, or the X-Men. Being in a relationship, however, had a profoundly positive impact on Rogue. Not only did she have to practice emotional honesty and learn to share by the terms of their agreement, but she also had to seriously step up in terms of her maturity. He brought out the best in her because he needed her best, because he challenged her worldview and respected her - if not it - and this resulted in her gaining confidence and understanding why she believed what she believed. The relationship also helped make inroads on her powers-and-mother issues - she was wanted for herself, and not what she could do. Her powers were completely incidental, and her touch could be used for more than giving pain. It’s safe to say that without this experience, Rogue would not yet have reached the internal acceptance of herself necessary to control her powers as she does.

7) Was drafted into the war and had to fight to kill on several occasions, including one hellish zombie apocalypse scenario and the only battle which the Lucetians actually lost, a horrible swamp conflict, and one incursion on the moon, where she had to enter someone’s dreams and convince them to kill the person they most loved (in the dream) in order to save their life.
She was willing to kill the enemy on these drafts, something which set her sharply apart from some of Luceti’s other heroes, and something which bothered her a great deal. In the end, whether or not someone valued life, choice is one of the main things that drew her away from Mystique and to the X-Men… unfortunately, in canon, Rogue was not able to keep to their ideal of non-killing when she shoved a frozen Mystique off a cliff. This caused her to have a sharp delineation between being a murderer (which is one of the more horrible ways she viewed herself) and between being a soldier - both of these things were made entirely distinct in her mind from being an X-Man.
Also notable were the many, many times she was wounded, sometimes almost unto death, as a result of this battle. Sadly, these wounds have had very little effect on her fighting style - she is still naturally inclined to brawling rather than strategic fighting, and it is only because of the limitations of her powers as well as her training that she manages to think a step or two ahead in a combat scenario.

8) She had her values challenged time and time again, was broken by loss and frustration and disappointment, built up again with the help of her friends, and has emerged a stronger, more centered and open person.

At Drift Fleet, Rogue had a chance to tentatively explore what ‘not pushing everyone away immediately’ was like. She… wasn’t very good at it; she still isn’t, but she did find that when sharing her powers with others, the reaction was - more often than not - What do you need? How can we help? as opposed to Ew, get away from me, you freak, which, although she objects to that attitude toward mutants on principle, she can’t argue that she richly deserves it. DF was also a matter of constant surveillance and adjusting to the very weird pressure of being on ‘reality tv’ and really awful food. I’d like to keep these months, just because of the friendships she made that were made as very needed affirmation that people can exercise the (in her opinion: incredibly poor judgement) to be loyal to her without wanting anything back.

Personality:
Rogue is X-Men Evolution’s first Goth. In her earlier days, and in canon, Rogue embraced ‘darker things’ as a form of solace – since no one can get close to her, she did her best to make it that no one wanted to in an effort to protect both others and herself. She can be bitingly sarcastic and developed a very ‘tough’ persona – she was and is very willing to both start and finish a fight as seen in her many confrontations with the Brotherhood. Over the course of her time in Luceti, however, as Rogue has come to accept herself more and to mature, she has let some of her hard edges soften. She no longer wears gothic make-up, and though she still dresses with an edge has let her hair down a little bit. She maintains her tough exterior and ‘take no shit’ attitude, but not to the same, militant extent.

Underneath it all, Rogue is actually a total softie – she loves her ridiculous romance novels just as much as she loves her hard metal; she really genuinely wants to be friends with people, to be liked and admired – but for the longest time felt like that was impossible, that no one would like her for her. This attitude was even more firmly entrenched as a result of Mystique’s betrayal. Even in the midst of this fear, it didn’t stop Rogue from trying. When Rogue saw that the X-Men were like a family, she wanted it enough so that when Scott treated her like a person, she responded to it, and when Kitty and Kurt persisted in befriending her, she accepted them and appreciated them in her own way. This willingness to try remains at almost the same tentative level, despite her new acceptance of herself and her powers. Her experiences in Luceti taught her both the necessity of having someone to rely on, and that people can and will leave you without warning and whether or not they want to leave. This has made her want to cling harder onto the friendships that she already has, and more willing to be open to others who might need her… but she is still shy about initiating friendly contact with others.

For Rogue, the world exists in delineations of gray. Her abilities have enabled her to experience the life and memories of some of her world’s greatest villains and heroes as if she is that person, and as such she has a unique empathy and understanding for others that she usually tries to hide under layers of snark and cynicism. This worldview causes her to treasure the few things that she finds which are truly ‘light’ or good. This understanding has also resulted in her having some very firm opinions about ‘feelings and motives’ vs. ‘actions.’ A person can do the wrong thing for the right reasons and get off a lot more lightly than a person who has the right reasons and does the wrong thing. Overall, Rogue finds actions to be the only currency she is willing to deal in - love is very well and good, but if it exists without loyalty, how is it to be believed? Despite her understanding of how easily it is to go astray, or perhaps because of it, Rogue has very definite ideas about what is Right and what is Wrong. She does not always do what she believes to be Right, but she aspires to. She has a lot of admiration for people who can forgive, who can believe and hope even in impossible times, since she sees her tendency to be very much the opposite.

Rogue plays the guitar and loves music; she was born and raised in Mississippi and speaks with an outrageous Southern drawl, and she cooks up some mean grits. Even after years away from Earth, she’s done her best to hold on to that part of her identity: It is one thing about herself she truly knows. She has a sly, sarcastic sense of humor and really appreciates being able to banter with other people. She is compassionate and brave, if sarcastic and occasionally hostile, especially once her pride has been offended. She is coming to a more sane understanding of herself and her powers, and is tentatively exploring ‘how to deal with people when you’re not trying to make them all automatically go away.’ She’s bound to still be awkward at it, and to pick her confidants very carefully, but there’s a chance that she’ll start allowing more people to see just how much she actually cares.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping:
Rogue’s mutant ability is to absorb the life force or psyche of people that she touches. These ‘psyches’ give her access to the memories, skills, and abilities of the person she has touched. (Perhaps it’s best to link to her permissions post for the best, most in depth explanation I can give of her powers and how that affects her and (potentially) others.)

She also has a decent knowledge of basic mechanics and engineering; can fly a jet plane, disable a basic bomb, shoot various kinds of weapons, and more than hold her own in hand-to-hand combat, the basics of a well-rounded education at Charles Xavier and Mystique’s hands.

She also plays guitar, cooks, and is an amature mechanic.

Weaknesses and Warping
Of note, Rogue’s powers do come with their own handicaps and drawbacks. In touching someone, she temporarily becomes that person and has to fight to maintain her own identity throughout… and after. She hates it.

She has been working to try to control her powers, with the help of Loki (long story) and Ling Yao of Full Metal Alchemist (shorter story) -- she’s learning how to get the voices in her head to quiet down, and it’s done by accessing them and burning off the excess power. In terms of warping it, I think I’d like to backtrack that progress for her, not to the point of being driven nearly crazy by them as she was, but in making grabbing hold a lot more ‘slippery.’ I’ve gone through the power warping FAQ, and her powers are so weird that I didn’t see anything I thought clearly related to them. I’m happy to warp/nerf her powers further if you think they need to be fit in better. ^^

Other Characters In Game: n/a
In-Game Tag If Accepted: Rogue: Shira
Permissions for Character: Here you go
Are you comfortable with prominent elements of fourth-walling?: Yup.
What themes of horror/psychological thrillers do you enjoy the most?: The moments when a character is backed against a wall and has to Choose something, either he best of two bad options or something
Is there anything in particular you absolutely need specific content warnings for?: Not really, no - but extreme gore/canabalism and sexual assault warnings are appreciated.
Additional Information: Not that I can think of

⇓in character⇓

PHYSICAL AFFECTION: err... only very, very cautiously. With much CR development. Or else she will probably react violently or dodge out of the way and yell.

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Yeah, I'd rather we talk about how this goes down, because she will fight back and do so well. But what's mutant life without a little violence?

ROMANCE/FLIRTING: Hahahahaha. This is complicated, but if your character would flirt, go ahead! I’m not opposed to building up a ‘ship with her if it happens organically. She’ll respond… in a prickly fashion at first, most likely.

SEXUAL CONTENT: With CR build up and... idk, special circumstances due to her power issues, tho ultimately I prefer FTB.

PSYCHIC ABILITIES: Not so much

MAGIC/POWERS: Best answered Here

MEDICAL INFORMATION: The girl has had a lot of broken ribs/ripped and damaged ‘wings’ (which will no longer be there, thanks to Drift Fleet, but instead she’ll have two faint scars down her back). She’s stabbed in the heart and other good things too, but stole a healing factor to deal with that so -- she’s okay right now?

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS OR TRIGGERS: Content your character may be offensive with or offended by. Things they might be triggered by.

⇓out of character⇓

BACKTAGGING: Sure! If I accidentally drop a thread which you’re interested in continuing, please just ping me and let me know. I try my best, but sometimes things fall through the cracks.

FOURTH WALLING: I’m good with it! Rogue’s been exposed to a lot of it. The one thing that I would ask people talk to me about first is if they know her real name - anything having to do with that would be a major point in her personal characterization, and it’s not something I’m sure I want to deal with.

THREADHOPPING: Best to communicate with me and the other party first, but I’m certainly not opposed.

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS/TRIGGERS: I’m not going to play things that have to do with non-con or extreme gore/vore/cannibalism. But I’m not triggered by them, I can back away slowly.

ANYTHING ELSE: Not that I can think of!
